Emma Smith

Smith’s work is inspired by solitude, community and family dynamics.

Emma Smith is an award winning ceramic artist living and working in Jerseyville Ontario. Her wood-fired functional and sculptural ceramics are reflections of a simple, beautiful life - quietly providing utility for a shared meal, or embracing freshly picked flowers on the windowsill. Her work is inspired by solitude, community and family dynamics – the experiences that shape the way we see the world, the people who come in and out of our lives, and the physical spaces that form the backdrop of our memories.

After studying ceramics in Ontario at Sheridan College and Haliburton School of the Arts, she worked as an apprentice for potter Timothy Smith at Gleasonbrook Pottery in 2013. She later opened her own studio and a local fine art and fine craft boutique "Black & Smith" with her partner in the town of Jerseyville near Ancaster, Ontario. She is a pottery instructor at Mohawk College, teaches pottery classes in her studio and is involved in wood firing through the Potters Guild of Hamilton and Region. Recently she built a wood kiln with Mohawk College instructor Duncan Aird.

Emma exhibits her work internationally, and teaches workshops across Ontario.
